14 Feb Sermon Recap | Hebrews | The Supremacy of Christ
The letter to the Hebrews should serve as a warning and a challenge for us to know the Word and to know Jesus. The author of Hebrews counted on the biblical knowledge of his audience in order to draw attention to the supremacy of Jesus—to once again captivate their eyes and hearts with Jesus, challenge them, and open the doors for them to experience His greatness. Despite all of the worldly things that may consume our hearts, Jesus is greater.

1. Many of us have heard and been taught about Jesus but haven’t really seen Him. We haven’t really beheld the glory of the One and only. Hebrews wants to give us the opportunity to see Jesus—to give us a new set of eyes for who Jesus is. When is the last time you were truly captivated by Jesus? What specific areas of your life keep you from seeing Him every day?
2. Hebrews serves as a reminder that Jesus came as the fulfillment of everything that God had been saying in the Old Testament. He is greater than all things, past, present, and future. In what ways do you struggle with this concept? What do your thoughts and actions say about what you think is “greater”?
3. For many of us, there was a time when we experienced Jesus personally and truly understood that He took our shame and bore it on the cross. We were taken with Him. Are you still “taken” with Jesus? If not, what then are you taken with? What are the worldly things that seem more interesting and comforting to you than Jesus?
4. Hebrews is our opportunity to be captivated with Jesus again. Are you bored when you read Hebrews or do you feel the excitement of who Jesus is and what He has done for you? What do you need to redirect in your life so that you can study Hebrews with a pure heart, ready to be captivated by Jesus? Are there any action steps you need to take in order to read Hebrews with a fresh set of eyes?
Thoughts to Consider
1. Hebrews 1 gives us seven statements about who Jesus is. He is:
– Heir of all things.
– Creator of the universe.
– the radiance of God’s glory.
– the exact imprint of God.
– Sustainer of all things by His powerful Word.
– Purifier of sins.
– King.
2. In the Old Testament, the Jews previously received revelations from God through angels, but Jesus is greater than the angels. They received ideas about sonship, and Jesus is the fulfillment of sonship. He comes from something entirely different and greater than this world..
3. We will spend eternity wondering at, marveling at, exploring, studying, and being captivated by the glory of the Son.
4. Jesus stands outside of space and time. Everything that God has done has been done through Him.
5. Jesus is not just a reflection of God in the same way as the prophets were a reflection of God. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory—the ray of light and its source are the same thing, just as Jesus is God.
6. Similar to marriage, where a couple may have to work to really “see” each other, we have to work to really “see” Jesus sometimes. We have to truly see Him to behold Him.
“Jesus is inexhaustibly interesting and eternally captivating.“
“Jesus is not a representation of God—He is the representation of God.“
“We have to really see Jesus to behold Him. ”
“Jesus became a consumable for us so that we might not be consumed by the wrath of God.“
“Jesus is the greatest in every sense of the word.“
