Sermon Recap | Ephesians | The New Self

In Christ a new humanity is formed. Those who live in the new humanity do not live disoriented, futile lives but instead have hope in Christ. God has the power to bring us from darkness into the light; however, we must make a willful decision to choose the light and to avoid living separate from God. A transformation of the heart takes place when our lives are given to Christ; living outside of Christ can cause hearts to harden and become calloused. It is our responsibility as Christians to choose to find our hope and happiness in God or we will seek pleasure in empty places.

APPLICATION

-In what areas are you continuing to live like your former life, thinking you don’t have to worry about your sin because Jesus will forgive you?
-Do you feel sympathy and compassion for those around you wondering in confusion and darkness, just as you once did, or do you sit in judgment of them?
-Many of us try to bargain with God—trying to get Him to do for us what we want Him to do. Is there a time you have tried to bargain with God? How did it turn out?
-We are called to throw off our old sinful nature and put on our new nature. What are the areas of your life where you have struggled to shed your sinful nature?

Thoughts to Consider

-If we aren’t oriented towards God, we will orient ourselves toward something else— trying to find things that will bring us life, life that can only come from God.
-Because of what Jesus has done for us, and because we are forgiven, our lives should now be marked in a different way.
-Our agenda shouldn’t be to judge those around us who are living in darkness. Our agenda should be for the people around us to no longer live in darkness.
-If we haven’t experienced a true conversion, putting off our old self and putting on our new self in Christ, we are just religious pretenders.
-Experiencing real power in my life requires conversion, not just religions.
