Where do our talents and abilities intersect with our call to make disciples? And when do those things line up in a such a way that we move into an opportunity for full time ministry?

These are questions that every follower of Christ must wrestle with, and they are questions that may have different answers during different seasons of our lives.

Becoming Clear

Kim Spiecker, a member at our Downtown campus, has found God leading her to a very specific answer to these questions. As a recent college grad, a lifetime athlete, and a current fitness coach, sports ministry has always been close to her heart. And, while she has taken every opportunity to support local sports ministries as she lives and works in Greenville, she is now beginning a year of full time ministry with the organization Athletes in Action.

Kim served with Athletes in Action (a ministry of Cru) through a short-term trip over this past year. The organization is committed to using athletics as a platform to point others to Christ, with the hope that there will be followers of Christ on every team in every nation.

Using her talent

During Kim’s internship, she will help organize basketball tours, recruit and disciple athletes, share her story with teams during tournaments, and serve at the Women’s Coaching Convention. She knows that this internship will be one step in a lifetime of following the Lord, that, as she learns more about herself, God, and ministry, she will be better equipped to lead and serve through sports.

Kim will move to Ohio to begin her internship at the end of August. She says, “As I transition into ministry, I need lots of prayer. I face the challenge of raising my own financial support.I need ministry partners who will support me prayerfully and financially.”

Choosing to move

We are often content to allow one-time serving opportunities to remain just that- a single serving event. However, God may be using these events (whether short term trips or local serving opportunities) to challenge us to move. It’s in these steps of faith and in the willingness to move into long-term sacrifice that God shapes us. Our own spiritual growth often occurs even as we are taking on responsibility for the spiritual growth of others.
