In Exodus 19:1-25, God shows fierce kindness in the way He delivers His people and draws them into a relationship with Him. Despite our brokenness, God wants to draw us to Him in the same way. Only when we recognize our need for Him can we fully recognize His great mercy in delivering us.

1. God identifies His people as His special treasure, His Kingdom of priests, and His holy nation. God fiercely identifies with us, advocating for us and drawing us in. Think of a time when you were in a moment of brokenness or shame and someone identified with you and drew you in. What did they do to identify themselves with you, and how did this make you feel? Has there been a situation in which the other person distanced themselves? How does this relate to your relationship with God, and how have you seen Him identify with you, even in your brokenness and shame?
2. God not only brings His people out of Egypt, but He brings them into a relationship with Him. He continually goes to great lengths to prove His love for us. How do you typically respond to His relentless pursuit of you? How have you seen His pursuit of you in your life? In what ways has your self-reliance kept you from experiencing the fullness of your relationship with Him?
3. God is holy in ways that we cannot comprehend. We are small, frail, and corrupt in ways we cannot imagine. In what ways do you minimize your view of God and inflate your view of self (through words, manipulation, self-promotion, control, self-protection, being domineering, etc.)? How do Hebrews 10:19-22 and Psalm 103:13-14 wreck your view of self and elevate the holiness of God?
Thoughts to Consider
– You are defined only by who God has created you to be and what He is doing in your life.
– If you are going to relate to this great God, there will be complexity involved. With His holiness and justice, He also brings the fullness of mercy and love.
– In order to bless His people, God had to curse His enemies.
– It was the fierce kindness of God to deliver Israel; He doesn’t just bring them out of Egypt—He brings them to Himself.
– In Psalm 103:13-14, we are reminded that even when we forget how glorious God is, He does not forget how weak we are.
– In Exodus 19, we see that the Israelites have to stand outside of the boundary because they can not handle coming face-to-face with the holiness of God. But Hebrews 10:19-22 tells us that because of Jesus, there is no more boundary—we have access to boldly enter the holiest place in Heaven.

“It’s not your sin that will keep you from God but your own self-sufficiency.”
“If you will embrace your sin and embrace your weakness then you can know the embrace of our great God.”
“God is holy and set apart, yet imminently approachable.”
