With Each Swing of the Hammer

“With each swing of the hammer, you are serving a bigger purpose.”

I heard these words from Kristen, an adult woman who moved into a Habitat for Humanity home when she was seven years old. She was encouraging the 100+ volunteers who were in the room, and thanking them for changing her family’s life.

Do you ever wonder if your volunteer and missional efforts are worth it? Do you ever wonder if your small efforts make a difference?

If you sometimes doubt, if you sometimes grow weary and want to give up, if sometimes you do give up, you are not alone. I have been there. And I return often.

You and I need to remember that every nail that was driven in Kristen’s home was for a purpose. Every nail was needed, as part of a bigger collective impact.

Small deeds are needed, but we can’t be content with putting in token efforts.

But that house couldn’t have been built by people driving in one nail and walking away. A loving army of servants needed to each hammer in many nails, and they needed to come back and do it again.

One nail isn’t enough, but every nail matters. Likewise, small deeds are needed, but we can’t be content with putting in token efforts.

There are many ways you can “swing a hammer” and engage the needs of our community:

Get serving, and keep serving. If you had grown weary and frustrated, and even if you have given up, there is no better time to re-start than now. The Kristens of our community need us to keep hammering away.

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:8
